Permeation refers to the ability of gases or liquids to pass through a material at the molecular level. Even chemically resistant materials like PTFE are not completely impermeable.

In applications such as:

  • Chemical transfer lines
  • Pharmaceutical processing
  • Semiconductor manufacturing
  • Gas handling systems

…low permeation is critical to prevent:

  • Contamination
  • Product loss
  • Safety hazards (e.g. gas leakage)

Paste extrusion produces a tightly packed structure, which reduces microscopic pathways that allow permeation. In contrast, isostatic moulding results in a more random internal structure, increasing the likelihood of permeation over time.

Paste Extruded vs Isostatic PTFE

Property Paste Extruded PTFE Isostatic Moulded PTFE
Molecular Structure Aligned Random
Density Uniformity High Moderate
Permeation Resistance Excellent Lower
Surface Finish Smooth Coarse
Mechanical Strength High Lower
